From The Zambian Ebony Wood

In a nutshell, Ebony is a dense black/brown wood yielded by several different species, and is considered to be among the hardest in world. It is dense enough to sink in water, and its finely-textured with a mirror finish when polished up, making it an adorable ornamental wood.

The name “ebony” is Egyptian derivation – “hbny” – which refers primarily to Dalbergia melanoxylon, rather than the known species of today.

Ebony wood uses vary. From musical instrumental parts such as pianos, violins, guitars, to anything like chess sets, household utensils, and jewelry and much more.
